Måneskin’s “Beggin’ ” is one of the fastest-rising No. 1s on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart by a new artist in the last 25 years, as the song crowns the tally dated Oct. 9 in just its seventh week on the survey.
Måneskin completes the quickest climb to No. 1 on Alternative Airplay with a first ruler since Alice in Chains, whose “Check My Brain,” the band’s lone leader (despite a career at the format dating the early 1990s), also took just seven weeks to hit No. 1 in October 2009.
As for newcomers to the format (here defined as acts still within their first year of charting on Alternative Airplay), Måneskin sports the fastest flight to No. 1 for a group’s first leader since Chumbawamba, whose crossover classic “Tubthumping” reached the summit in its seventh week in November 1997.
The four-piece Måneskin is the first act from Italy to lead Alternative Airplay in the chart’s 33-year history.
“Beggin’,” a cover of The Four Seasons’ top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hit from 1967, is the first remake to top Alternative Airplay since Meg Myers’ rendition of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” led for two weeks in February 2020.
Måneskin currently boasts two entries on Alternative Airplay; three weeks prior to the debut of “Beggin’,” the band’s “I Wanna Be Your Slave” bowed and has since hit No. 21 (Sept. 18). It ranks at No. 24 on the latest list, marking its sixth straight week in the top 25.
Concurrently, “Beggin’ ” remains at its No. 2 best on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 5.3 million audience impressions, up 8%, according to MRC Data. The song has also crossed over to other pop radio formats, as it jumps 8-6 on Pop Airplay and 21-16 on Adult Pop Airplay. On the all-format Radio Songs chart, it lifts 14-12 (40.3 million, up 12%).
Elsewhere, “Beggin’ ” places at No. 3 on the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, with its radio audience metrics joined by 7.7 million U.S. streams and 4,100 sold. It also rises to a new No. 19 best on the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100.
