Hello from beautiful Los Angeles, my July escape. I love LA because there’s nothing to do here and life couldn’t be easier. I’ll get antsy by August and return to New York for the (actually happening) Jabroni’s pop-up, but for now everything east of La Brea is home. It’s a delight. If you have strong takes on where I should be eating besides Found Oyster and Luv2Eat Thai, hmu.
I’ve got six weeks worth of summer-centric banger and jam recs to round up below the paywall — LA and NYC restaurant takes, undeniable outings, must-listens — so let’s get into it. For some free stuff, I weighed in on men’s work bags over at The Strategist and talked to
about the new Sky Ting.Bangers
My go-to rec for the summer is to embrace more film and feast double features. I’m on a personal heater of combining engulfing movies with long, comforting meals, and little has made me happier — especially in New York, where the theaters are playing a ton of classics. A few weeks ago I followed an early-evening, sun-soaked dinner at King in the West Village with a screening of Before Sunset up in Damrosch Park. The panisse was lovely and the final lines of the movie hit as good as ever. Some more good double-headers: In The Mood For Love at IFC and a rainy walk to Cervo’s for fried oysters and tomato rice with squid. Thai Diner and Austin Butler doing his thing in The Bikeriders. Ci Siamo — the most DC restaurant in New York — and a packed house for Barry Lyndon at Metrograph.
